Amidst Corruption Claims -- Zimbabwe Declares Mugabe's Birthday A Public Holiday

Zimbabwe has officially declared 21 February to be Robert Gabriel Mugabe National Youth Day, thereby making the former president’s birthday a public holiday, the Herald newspaper reported.

Calls for the former president’s birthday to be made a national holiday were adopted by the government in August, following intense lobbying by the Zanu-PF Youth League, the Herald reports. The decision was officially recorded on Friday, it adds.

Last week, President Mnangagwa said the former president needed to be given the respect and recognition he deserved as one of the founders and leaders of Zimbabwe. “To me personally, he remains a father, mentor, comrade-in-arms and my leader,” he said during his acceptance speech at his inauguration on Friday.

Reports that Mugabe was granted $10m (£7.5m) to ease him out of office have not been confirmed. There is speculation as to whether Mnangagwa will select a broad-based government or keep figures from the Mugabe era. He is expected to form a cabinet this week. Mugabe resigned last week after a military intervention and days of mass protests.

No Governor Can Endorse Buhari For Second Tenure -- APC Chieftain TInubu

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said governors have no right to endorse President Muhammadu Buhari for 2019.

Tinubu said this to newsmen after he, in company with former governor of Osun State, Bisi Akande, met with leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, Chief Rueben Fasoranti, behind closed doors, yesterday.

The meeting, which was also attended by Afenifere chieftains, including its Secretary General, Chief Sheinde Arogbofa, sources said, may not be unconnected with preparations for the 2019 general elections.

Tinubu arrived Akure by 12.00pm, yesterday, and he was received by Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, who was was accompanied by some APC stalwarts in the South West.

It was gathered that issues affecting the interest of Yoruba, in the 2019 general elections, were discussed at the meeting. Sources also said the meeting may be aimed at finding a common course for Yoruba leaders ahead of general polls.

Speaking with newsmen at the end of the closed door meeting, Tinubu said no governor can endorse Buhari for second term and that no governor has the right to appropriate the power of endorsement to him self.

He said president Buhari  is a man who believes in due process and rule of law, and added that due process will be followed in the choice of the party’s candidate for the 2019 presidential election.

IED Facility Destroyed In Borno By Air Force

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says it has successfully destroyed an insurgents’ facility for manufacturing of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in Borno.

The Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya, who disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja, said the feat was in furtherance of operation “Lafia Dole”.

Adesanya said the facility was located in YIWE forest,  23km south of Konduga in the state.

“Previous NAF Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions had revealed the location to be the insurgents’ hideout, from where the Maiduguri suicide bombing of Nov. 18 was reportedly planned.

“Available Human Intelligence also revealed that the hideout contained IED-making facility for the insurgents’ suicide bombing attacks.

“Accordingly, one Mi-17 Helicopter, 2 x Alpha Jet and 2 x F-7Ni aircraft were detailed to carry out air interdiction on the target over a two-day period.

“Overhead the location, the aircraft took turns to deliver a combination of bombs, rockets and
cannons on the target,” he said.

The director explained that the subsequent Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) revealed that the strikes had destroyed the IED-making facility and other insurgents structures, killing an unspecified number of them in the process.

Mnangagwa born on September 15, 1942, helped direct the 1970 Zimbabwe's war of independence. He later became the country's spy-master during the 1980 civil conflict. He was the first vice president of Zimbabwe and was in power from December 12, 2014 to November 6, 2017,
when he was dismissed by Mugabe for allegedly plotting against his government.



 He later fled to South Africa after claiming alleged threat against him and his family Mnangagwa would step into power as soon as talks on succession ends.
